I have really enjoyed my work so far this week. Yesterday I
sent out a survey to the many members of the Hawken community, which asked them
to reflect on their Hawken middle/lower school experiences. The survey asked
current students and alumni the following questions:
What was your
favorite Hawken field trip and why?
On a
scale from 1-10, how do you think these field trips affected your lower school
experience? (1= they were a waste of time, 5=indifferent, 10= I can't imagine
the lower school without them!)
What
do you believe to be the greatest benefit of experiential learning?
Any
funny field trip memories?
What
was your favorite long school trip?
Fill
in the blank: Going on field trips teaches you ______.
I am very pleased with the level of responses so
far. It has been very interesting reading all the responses and comparing the
thoughts and memories of each person. It is also cool comparing responses
between graduation years and seeing how impressions differ from grad year to
grad year.
Almost all
the answers have been very positive, expressing that field trips allow students
to learn “beyond the text books,” and truly engage in what they are studying.
Others have commented that they associate their lower school trips with serious
bonding time with their classmates. I have really enjoyed reading the funny
field trip memory responses as well; it is amazing to me that people have such
vivid and detailed memories from events that occurred so long ago!
