"Light Show" *English Dubbed History Lesson*

So, since we've been here a few days, Madi and I were really starting to feel comfortable in the city and wanted to reach out and take advantage of our independence. We get invited to Brazilian parties, but our parents were exactly super keen on the idea of us partying our way through senior project with Brazilian strangers, so instead, we decided to buy tickets to a light show at La Basilique, or Notre Dame (of Montreal).

We'd already been inside this church before and it is unbelievably beautiful. It's gigantic and has these amazing gothic ceilings that are bright turquoise with golden stars. All in all, the church doesn't need any help at all being breathtaking, it's just incredible. So the light show was advertised as "And Then There Was Light" , and the picture was this very dramatic picture of bluish white light bursting through the windows of the Notre Dame, and it looked pretty cool.

It was not cool. We sat down and got these headsets, and when they handed them to us they asked, English? Now here in Montreal, we get this question ALOT. Almost every time we speak to someone in a public environment, but this time all that meant was that there was going to be talking. Enough of it for it to be necessary to translate it into English. Great.

There was a really cool setup, sort of Cirque Du Soleil-esque, which makes sense considering the headquarters for Cirque Du Soleil are located here. They had these big drapes in triangular shapes that looked like sails, and they were projecting cool colors on them while music played in our headsets. It wasn't a bad start.

The show was actually a glorified history lesson with horribly projected, horribly performed reenactments of the founding of Montreal and the Notre Dame. It was enlgish dubbed, and poorly synced, and Madi and I spent most of the time laughing, until they dropped the drapes and we got to indulge in the sight of the actual cathedral again.

So, overall, our first attempt at seeing a show was a bust. But we've had so many great experiences before and since. Better luck next time?
