Self Defense Training
Over this past week I have ben enrolled in self defense training courses for my project. These courses are mandatory for all staff members who are going to be working at the Metzenbaum center. The courses consist of all day meetings where the mornings are reserved for informational sessions and the afternoons are hands on learning. If you were like me, you are probably wondering why are these sessions needed if you are only working with people with disabilities? I found out later that day that incidents involving physical violence and harm do occur on a daily basis. Clients with severe mood swings and behavioral problems are the ones who usually are at risk for violent behavior. The other day, I was in a situation where a client came up behind me and was about to rip out my hair. Luckily we were trained for this situation and no immediate damage was done. That situation really made me realize why those classes were important and how situations and crisis prevention is always useful to know.

Whoa that's really scary. Can you elaborate a little bit more about the possible risk situations and how the specific training you have had?
ReplyDeleteDo you think that there's any better way to monitor behavior and keep these types of situations from arising or do you think that basic self-defense is the best preventative mechanism? What types of basic self-defense do you think all people should have?
Sorry for so many questions I just find self-defense training really interesting and I would love to know more about this, like if you're learning just a few basic training moves or if you're interested in learning Krav Mga or other types of training.
