Land Management

Under the lead of Sarah, we make up the Land Management, which is a small organization of senior project students.  One of the most important things that our division does is clear invasive species from the nature center.  The first invasive species that we dealt with was a strange plant called Garlic Mustard.  Garlic Mustard is a small green plant with a very long stem, and a few white flowers perched on top.  It sounds like a harmless plant, but it spreads rapidly and quickly takes over the entire area of the Nature Center.  These were pretty easy to pull up in most locations, but at one point we had to pick some from a patch of blackberries.  The Blackberry plants had a large amount of thorns, so we had to carefully navigate in and out of the many branches.  This became a real struggle, and we ended up with a lot of scratches on our exposed arms.  One member of our group, Claire, accidentally slipped and fell onto one of the spiky plants and the branch penetrated her jeans and gave her a very large scrape on the side of her leg.  Overall though, it was a fun experience and filled up several days of work!
