First Day in Savannah

Yesterday we spent the day travelling, a draining experience to be sure. We arrived at my grandmother's house at around midnight and, after settling down and unpacking a bit, went to sleep in the wee hours of the morning. After an early start, we took a drive through some of the many scenic areas of downtown Savannah, which is only about 10 to 15 minutes away from where we're staying. We drove around some of the famous town squares, grassy little parks plopped right in the middle of busy streets lined with boutiques and restaurants, and got a quasi-tour from my grandmother and grandfather of some of the most famous historical landmarks. We decided to take one of the many popular trolley tours in the coming days in order to get better acquainted with the rich history of the city. After that, we visited another famed landmark on the outskirts of the city, Bonaventure Cemetery. Unlike any cemetery I have ever been to, the silence surrounding the area gave it a feeling of genuine peacefulness as opposed to an air of abandonment and sadness. Old weathered headstones dating back to the early 19th century sat under tall tress with hanging moss, framed by a cloudless blue summer sky. After a long walk around the vast grounds, we decided to visit my aunt, who had several great ideas for interviews and other aspects of the community we could experience. With ideas buzzing around my head and so many things to see and experience, I can hardly wait for tomorrow...and the next day...and the next...
