Hockey Movies On A Monday

The Rocket, A story of a young Francophone hockey player that gets his big break in the hockey world, getting his chance to finally play for the Canadians. While this movie is a hockey movie, it's so much more than that as well. This movie reflects back upon the innately divided nature of Quebec as a province. There are the Anglo's and there are the Francophone's, and these two sides have clashed for years. This movie pays tribute to the barriers between the Anglo's and Francophone's being broken. The protagonist Maurice Richard, a Francophone hockey player, looked down upon by the Anglo Canadians as a "typical french" with no competitive nature or drive to win. The insults thrown around in this movie were extremely poignant, because even now a days, Quebec is still such a divided province. There is actually a divide, a real life split, between Montreal. There is an Anglo side, and a Francophone side, and the two sides do not regard the other too fondly. While this movie was set in the 40's-50's, the theme of a divided province is still extremely prevalent to the times now. Seeing the divide first hand is something you never think you'll really see, but only read about. It is such a significant difference between the two sides of Montreal that if you actually go there, you will see the street where the division occurs. After visiting Montreal, I don't think the city or the province of Quebec will ever be fully united, there will always be a clash between the Anglo's and the Francophone's. Quebec is trying to become it's own country because the Francophone's are so tired of the Anglo side. Watching this movie just really hit home after visiting the province and being able to witness what the movie was talking about first hand.
