Freeman movement
In my project I have been working with a family friend and criminal defense lawyer named Richard Drucker in downtown Cleveland. The last two days have been filled with meetings and delegations for a rather interesting case. A man went to a car dealership to buy a car, and gave them what was basically a fake check. Despite not actually driving or using the car, the man was still convicted of a felony. This is because this man is what society calls a "Freeman." Freemen are an interesting group. Basically they believe there is no government, they don't need to pay taxes, and that humans are souls trapped in a body. They have their own code book (similar to our declaration of independence), the man has a bunch of papers from the "international society of law" saying he is a freeman, etc. So the courts and the government really hate Freeman. Mr. Drucker believes he can get the charges brought down to a misdemeanor, however, this man's politics are very liberal, so he is not backing down. It's looking like this case is going to court.
